Nigerian man arrested in Canada for defrauding more than 50 people of $230,000

26-year-old Michael Ose Odine has been charged with running a massive fraud scheme involving more than 50 people. In March, Winnipeg police identified the marketing scam that was targeting people
on the internet through false advertisements.

“He would go online, he would respond to ads. He would place ads, where individuals would respond to him,” Const. Jason Michalyshen said. WPS said the suspect’s communication typically occurred by email and text messages.

They explained that some of the online advertisements were about romance, employment and rental scams. The victims are from a number of places across Canada, the United States and Europe, and have been defrauded of more than $230,000, police said.

Odine was first arrested in March and charged weeks later, then released on bail in April. While out on bail in May, he was arrested and charged with additional fraud-related offences again.

Then on Oct. 3, while still in custody, police charged him with 24 more charges, bringing the total to over 50. He remains in custody. WPS said that he is not a Canadian citizen.
